Given the current political and social challenge, it is of great importance that democracies consistently declare and convey their values. An understanding of openness and the positive earnings of cultural diversity, shall be transferred to the younger generation. The authors of the Picador Guest Professorship are ambassadors of democracy and diversity at the school. The guest professors of the current term at the University of Leipzig conducts together with the teachers and students of the Anton-Philipp-Reclam-Gymnasium a creative writing workshop as a «Room for Opportunities». The workshop shall teach creative writing techniques focused on the theme "Democracy and Tolerance in Society".
First Picador at School Guest Professor was Justin Torres. Torres father has Puerto Rican roots, his mother Irish-Italian. He grew up in New York, where he lives today. is Daniel Pena. Pena holds both Mexican and US citizenship, and teaches at the University Houston in Texas.
The current Picador at School-Guest Professor Josh Weil lives with his family in Sierra Nevada. He is author and teacher for creative writing and was awarded with Pushcart Prize 2016 for "Long Bright Line".
